Ms.
Sopper writes:
At our first school of the day we were serenaded by students performing vocal
works, an accordian piece, and a lovely performance on a traditional Chinese
wind-instrument. With very little advanced warning, Mike and Kai then got up
to give their presentations. I was with the group who had the great privilege
of
attending
and participating in Ms. Su Hong's English class. Her subject for the day was "Great
Women in History" and drawing on the very careful preparation her students
brought
to class, she led the students in discussions about what makes someone "great" and
whether it is harder for a woman to achieve greatness than it is for a man. In
the course of the lesson the students practiced using between fifteen and twenty
adjectives in sentences. Ms Su asked for volunteers, encouraged the shy, and
gently corrected pronunciation. She checked for understanding in Chinese, but
otherwise, the class was conducted almost entirely in English. She seemed to
be striving for a balance between covering a great deal of vocabulary and practice
speaking as well as encouraging students to express their opinions and to think
independently about the subject.
Later in the day Cailey and Oliver joined Mike
and Kai in giving their presentations to a large auditorium. I had the impression
that people were very interested in hearing what these American students had
to say about their school and country and English teacher, Ms. Su Hong, expressed
her admiration at the quality of the students' Powerpoint presentations.
