Students perform for us.

Ms. Sopper writes:
Our second school visit of the day, the high school for Yunnan Nationalities, began with an enthusiastic greeting by student guides dressed in traditional national costume. This, and their gift to each of us of a pendant placed around our necks as we got off the bus, set the tone for our school visit. We were treated to several performances of traditional dances and plays. The students' level of engagement, focus. talent, and practice were evident. We were lucky to be able to offer the gift of dance, thanks to Oliver who impressed all with an impromptu ballet he presented without musical accompaniment, but with great confidence, style, and skill.

As a farewell gift Mr. Blomgren gives out flag pins to the students.

Another amazing performance by the students for us.

Maisie writes:

Today was our second day at our home stays. My sister's name is Angela. Her family has been very generous to me and I felt very lucky to have such a nice family. This morning Angela and I went to a middle school (Goaxin First of Secondary School) to meet the rest of the class and we saw several Chinese students perform songs and play musical instruments. Then several AACE students: Mike, Cailey, Oliver, and Kai did their presentations for the Chinese students, teachers, and administrators.

Then later on we were split into two groups; one group went to an English class, and the other went to a music class. My pod went to the English class. Their lesson was about great women in history and for part of the lesson the students were to discuss the subject with us. I was really impressed by their ability to speak English so well!

Back at the hotel we got ready for our second middle school named, Yunnan Nationality High School. As soon as we got there they were applauding us at the gate. It made us feel very welcome. They even presented each of us with lovely necklaces in a lei-like ceremony as we got off the bus. The students greeting us were all dressed in traditional ethnic clothing.

I was nervous about giving my presentation, and so was especially thankful that they seemed excited to share their preparations for a huge dancing ceremony with us. Then by the time we had shared a game or two of ping pong there was no time left for me to present. We left CDs of our presentations so they'll be able to enjoy them at their leisure.

The whole day I was looking forward to getting back with my host sister. When 5:30 came around, she came to pick me up at the school and we went back to her house where her grandparents and parents taught me how to make dumplings.

After dinner they gave me several gifts and we took pictures together. The whole time I was there they really made me feel welcome and at home. They were amazed at the fact that I have three sisters and a brother, and that I could use the chopsticks!

I was disappointed that this was going to be my last night with them - they were so thoughtful and kind. But tomorrow is another adventure: the banquet. I am excited to dress up for it. I can't wait!

We took a tour of the school. This is the server room for the technology of the school. See the servers behind the glass in the humidity controlled atmosphere?

We toured one of the 6 story dorms for students. Many students in this school come from surrounding rural areas.

Oliver makes us proud with his stunning ballet technique.
