2005 CHINA TRIP - DAILY DIARY

4-14-05 - Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City and Beijing M.S. #8

The Forbidden City
by Brian Clark

Today we traveled to the Forbidden City where we found it to be under restoration for the 2008 Olympics. The tremendous life this compound has endured has put a toll on its appearance and for the up and coming Olympics Beijing is doing many things to facelift the entire city. Many new structures are being built, are in the planning stages of being built, but one of the biggest is the Forbidden City restoration. During our visit some of the the compound was closed off to visitors but we were able to see the main buildings. We got to walk the path that the emperor's walked when they would enter the city and for me, walking on this path made me envision the servants, concubines, and 1000's of other staff lining the path.all dressed in their traditional court clothing and all greeting the emperor, surrounded by the massive buildings. For me this was an incredible experience despite the restoration. Another aspect of the city that I found interesting was how one could see the buildings from a distance and as one got closer the buildings would grow. Standing next to columns 10to 15 times the size of yourself is amazing!

Outside the main gate to the Forbidden City. Already the construction is evident.

The main hall of the Forbidden City seen from just inside the gate.

Standing in front of the Main Hall, looking back at the gate. The emperor's marble walkway is made from one tremendously huge piece of marble.

.
Even in the Forbidden City the western world has a foothold. We saw plaques thanking American Express and other corporate donors for funds to restore certain halls. Starbucks is also alive and well and has a tiny cafe in one corner of the outer part of the city, as you can see by Ms. Simpson and Ms. Greene's delight.

amazing trees in the Emperor's Garden!

And to the left of the Main Hall not the construction on all the side buildings. These were all blocked off to us.

The emperor's "love shack" as the student's called it.
Located in the garden atop a 40' tall rock formation that was somehow brought to the garden. This is where an emperor would meet with his concubines.

A sign in the Emperor's Garden spelling out the rule...

...and Ms. Brooks's pod breaking the rule!

After lunch we bused over to the Beijing Normal Middle School (read high school in American terms) #8 to join and English class and meet some students. Pictures----->
