The Western Hills is obviously west of Kunming and a popular attraction
for tourists and locals. |

We rode to the top of the hill on a chair lift. We could have
walked up but because of time constraints chose to walk down only. |
The view from one of the carved marble railing surrounded terraces
marking the climb. |

The Western Hills are a monument to three
philosophies in Chinese history; Confusionism,
Toaism and Buddhism. Erin and Chris stopped
at one of the many grottos on the way down.

As one walks up (and down) the carved stone steps in the mountain
there are alters to each philosopy along the way. Our guide told
us the Western Hills represented the combination of these philosophies,
which were accepted by the Chinese government in the 1600's as
one. |

Owen working his way down the mountain. He wins "most rolls
of film taken" with over 17 rolls in the two week trip. We
can't wait to see his pix! |

Chinglish is the nickname for Chinese translations into English
that are a little "off". This wonderful example was
found on the way down the mountain: "Caution Sliding not
to Fall". |

This critter was found on one of the
stalls on the way down and excited
us all. Science guy Steve took this
picture! |
